You stumbled across the personal webpage of Gottfried Haider, a 20-something year old creator of things.
about me
I was born in Vienna, which happens to be the capital of a small landlocked country with high mountains in central Europe. There, I enjoyed a general type of education while spending my spare afternoons trying to learn the inner workings of the mysterious world that personal computers opened up, and soon found myself writing small programs and otherwise getting creative. It was around that time that someone pointed me to the u19 award of the Prix Ars Electronica, a highly regarded media arts festival taking place every September in the city of Linz, where I immediately won an honorary mention in 1998 without really grasping the concepts of media or computer art at that time. But I was fascinated by the works presented there, especially the installations, and this formed the basis of my continued interest in the topic. In the following years, I won a second honorary mention and an award of distinction in 2004 before deciding to join the Digital Arts class at Vienna's University for Applied Arts, then led by Peter Weibel and Tom Fürstner. Since then, my interests have broadened again: I found myself absorbing theory and a more conceptual approach towards art and artistic practice. I also got into an ongoing on/off-relationship with design and sound while filling in love with art history. Finally, I learned a whole bunch of skills, like electronics or welding, which for me always makes for a pleasurable experience.
about this site
I envisioned this site to make my work available to a broader audience. Apart from that, there is also a small (research) blog where I try to write down on a semi-regular basis what keeps me occupied. This might be some interesting content I have come across, a simple remark, or little fragments of projects I am working on. The latter might be very sparsely, if at all, explained, so bare with me on those. Finally, the photos and videos I take with my mobile end up in found outside. They might be shots from artworks that meant anything to me, random views from the streets of the city I end up being, or anything in between. As I am big believer in tagging, all of the site's resources (including photos and videos) are described in such way. I hope that this kind of intertextual entanglement will help me explore narrative strategies for databases - a topic I like to tackle somewhen in the future - but in the mean time just play around with them! You might have noticed: English is not my native language, which means that I'll just switch over to German when I am too lazy. Sorry about that.
