intro
I set foot on the remote island of Plocica on October 7th 2007 as part of an artistic expedition team led by Nicolaj Kirisits and Klaus Filip. While the tiny strip of land was quickly divided among the treasure-hunting artists, I decided to focus on an aspect that most struck me in my preparations, namely the virtual absence of this isle from Google Earth, resulting from the poor resolution of the satellite imaginary used for this region of the world.
This in mind, I flew a robust helium balloon 100 meters above sea level - equipped with a wireless video camera, sending back its images to the ground. With this balloon on the leash, I roamed around the island, following a path that had emerged in the previous days of my presence in this confined space. While walking, the inert sphere up in the sky felt like an extension to my body - something like a literal über-ich monitoring my activities.
Using the footage gathered this way it is planned to project the moving and tumbling aerial image back to the floor using steerable mirrors, in order to create a fragmented and time-based map, playing with its origin and our notions of space in the age of Google Earth's looming hand/cursor.
